The River Otter
Background
Lutra canadensis, more widely known
as the river otter, is a sleek and silly creature similar to its sea otter cousin.
Known for their frolicking in the water and the snow, these year-round clowns
are a treat for observers of all ages.
Distinctive Characteristics
The otter's small body,
only about a foot in length, and its webbed feet make it an agile swimmer. A thick
brown coat, in addition to a layer of fat, keeps it warm in the winter.
Habitat
River otters live on land and in the water,
usually occupying an abandoned beaver dam or living along riverbanks. They stay
primarily in or around the water source, as long as it provides a good source
of food. They occasionally may stray inland, but only in search of food or another
source of water.
Spotting an Otter
The river otter is fond of its private
lifestyle. If you're hoping to spot one, find out where they've been seen before.
You just might be lucky enough to see one traveling down river or scampering into
its den. Have patience. If you appear to be at home in the environment, the animals
will feel more at home with you.
